This glossary contains terms used when discussing Jamaica's heritage.

Ancestor
Noun
A person who is several generations earlier in an individual's line of descent.
Example: The two groups are estimated to have last shared a common ANCESTOR at approximately 38 million years ago at the end of the Eocene.

Ethnic Group
Adjective
Pertaining to or characteristic of a people, especially a group sharing a common and distinctive culture, religion, or language. Ethnic group, a social group or category of the population that, in a larger society, is set apart and bound together by common ties of race, language, nationality, or culture.
Example: Many academics believe 'race' should be replaced by the term 'ethnic group'.
